A knit-a-long (KAL) is an event where knitters come together (in person or virtually) to knit the same pattern at the same time. Not only is it a great way to connect through our shared passion, but it’s also a great way to discover new dyers, be inspired by color combinations, cheer each other on, share tips and tricks, and give and receive support to/from fellow knitters.
The mysterious aspect of this KAL is the design itself: It remains a secret that reveals itself on your needles as you knit. The pattern is split into five parts, and you’ll receive each part separately, one week apart. There are only three pieces of information you will receive beforehand: it’s a rectangular shawl, it contains Brioche stitch, and you need four skeins of Fingering weight yarn in 2, 3, or 4 different colors.
The pattern is split up into five parts. You will receive the first part on May 26, 2023. Before then, an info file will help you prepare for the MKAL.
You’ll automatically receive an e-mail with a download link when a new part of the pattern is available. Please be patient, as the update notification may take a while to reach all participating knitters. Don’t forget to check your Spam folder if it doesn’t appear in your inbox!
Sharing is a big part of any MKAL, and sharing the progress and photos of WIPs is very much encouraged. Please avoid spoiling fellow knitters’ fun by using the logo or a photo of your yarn as the first image on your Ravelry project page (download the image to your phone or computer, then upload it to your project page).
Use the tag #SOSUknitsMKAL2023 and #BriocheModeShawlfor posting on social media. Please don’t share any photos of the instructions or use them as a photo background; the MKAL logo on the first pattern page is perfect for sharing on social media and as a placeholder for your Ravelry project page (so no spoilers are visible).
Connect in the MKAL Facebook group and Ravelry forum thread in my group.
The pattern is suitable for adventurous beginners and experienced knitters alike. As the title suggests, Brioche will be a large part of the design.
While other techniques needed for this design are secret, each pattern part will be accompanied by a detailed video tutorial, so you should be able to follow along even if they are new to you.
You can find the link to the video tutorials in your pattern files.

4 skeins of Fingering weight yarn
(about 360-400 / 394-437 yd per 100 g)
in 2–4 colors
You can use four colors for a 4-color version, one color twice for a 3-color version, or two colors twice for a two-color version.
The design works with a wide variety of colors and color combinations. Solid, semi-solid, and speckled yarn will all work well for this design, although I recommend using either only (semi-)solid colors or a combination of (semi-)solid and multi-colored yarn.
The info file will help you build your color palette.
1440 m / 1576 yd / 4 skeins in total
2 sets of US 4 / 3.5 mm circular needles (or size needed to optain gauge and optimal drape), 80–100 cm / 32–40“ length
Optional: 2 DPNs in the same size
Tip: use circular needles with different cable lengths, and/or work with DPNs when the stitch count is low
Recommended: larger needle size (US6–7/4–4.5 mm) for bind-off
tapestry needle, 2 stitch markers, and 1 removable stitch marker
20 sts / 21 rows = 10 cm / 4″ in Garter stitch
20 sts / 42 rows = 10 cm / 4″ in Brioche stitch
Measured after blocking. Gauge has an influence on the size of your finished shawl and your yardage!
The pattern is available in English and German.
Three different formats are available in each language: a standard layout, a print layout (b/w text, no images), and a mobile version (for viewing on smartphones and tablets).
When purchasing the pattern, you automatically have access to all versions. Please make sure you download the correct ones.
