Afterthought Pockets

This photo tutorial demonstrates how to add pockets to your knits with the “Afterthought” method using waste yarn.

If you don’t have a waste yarn in place (as shown below), you can still use this method by carefully snipping the yarn in the middle of where the pocket opening should be and unraveling to the left and right.

(1) When working the body, work the stitches where the pocket opening should be with waste yarn, then work over the waste yarn again and continue in pattern.

(2) Use a smaller needle size to pick up the stitches below the waste yarn (closer to the hem). You can use circular needles or a DPN.

(5) Place the stitches underneath the pocket opening (the ones closer to the hem) on hold. These stitches will later be used for the Pocket Ribbing.

(6) Use the stitches above the pocket opening to knit the Pocket Lining. Place pocket lining to the inside through the pocket opening and seam it to the inside.
