Slice of Light

For some, knitting is a simple pastime. For me and many others, knitting is so much more. It gives us purpose, it helps us think or clear our heads, it‘s a creative outlet or a mathematical challenge. We spend so much time on it that a lot of thoughts and feelings are knit into our projects. We knit our stress or aggravation away, we knit positive thoughts and love into gifts, stitch for stitch.

Knitting has helped me through some troubled times. When I didn‘t really know what to do with my life, knitting and the knitting community has given me a purpose, a direction, a new life really. I hope knitting this shawl will be a slice of light for you, too.

The shawl is knit in different textures and gauges. It starts with a large-gauge biased triangle, knit with one strand of fingering weight and one strand of lace weight mohair held together in a large rib pattern.
After picking stitches up from one of the triangle‘s sides, the shawl is then knit top-down at a smaller gauge in one- and two-color brioche and garter stitch short-row stripes. An i-cord surrounds the entire shawl for a clean and finished look.

The mix of mohair and fingering weight yarn and the play with gauges make this a large and airy shawl with lots of drape – a perfect slice of light on cooler summer nights or whenever you need a wooly hug.
